MacBook Screen Flickering: 6 Fixes to Try Before a Display Replacement
By Fixnok Tech Lab · Published · Updated · 2 min read
A flickering MacBook screen is either a software or settings issue (cheap to fix) or a hardware issue with the display flex cable or panel. Work through these steps in order.
1. Update macOS
Display-driver bugs are often fixed in point releases. Open System Settings → General → Software Update and install everything pending.
2. Change the refresh rate (14" and 16" Pro)
ProMotion models can flicker in some apps at variable refresh. Go to System Settings → Displays → Refresh Rate and try a fixed 60 Hz.
3. Turn off True Tone and automatic brightness
Rapid brightness changes can look like flicker in dim rooms. Turn both off for a day and see if it stops.
4. Reset NVRAM / SMC (Intel models)
On Intel MacBooks, restart and hold Option + Command + P + R for 20 seconds. Apple-silicon Macs (M1 to M4) reset these automatically on a full shutdown, so shut down, wait 30 seconds and power on.
5. Boot into Safe Mode
If the flicker disappears in Safe Mode, a login item or display utility is the cause. Remove recently installed screen-dimming, colour or menu-bar apps.
6. Test with an external monitor
Connect an external display.
- External is fine, built-in flickers: the fault is in the lid. That means the display flex cable or the panel.
- Both flicker: suspect the logic board or GPU. Book a board-level diagnosis.
The "stage-light" effect
On 2016-2018 13" MacBook Pros, a short display flex cable wears out at the hinge. It causes uneven backlight at the bottom edge that gets worse as you open the lid. This is a hardware fault and cannot be fixed by settings.
When to book a repair
- Lines appear and change when you move the lid
- Flicker only at certain lid angles
- Backlight dies completely while the image is faintly visible with a torch
Our technicians test the flex cable first. Replacing a full Retina assembly is not always necessary, and a cable-level fix costs much less.
